The
advantages of QITs Quality Information System
What is a Quality
Information System?
Similar to a Management
Information System, a Quality Information System is
a computerized system that can store and process
large amounts of data and learn from the
information. In a Management Information System,
data associated with sales, sales forecast, purchase
orders, manufacturing plans, inventory data, and so
on, are included in the system; meaningful reports
are then generated based on the information inside
the system to help management update their financial
estimates and make wise decisions.
Different from a Management
Information System, a Quality Information System
concentrates on quality related data. A
well-developed quality information system will
-
collect and store quality data
from a variety of sources such as different
operational systems and processes within the
organization,
-
define key problems and track
corrective actions, learn from past failures
and help generate solutions to prevent the
problem from happening again,
-
support and drive Total
Quality Management activities such as continuous
improvement.

Quality
Information System vs. MRP II Software and SPC
Software
Currently, there are two kinds of
quality assurance applications available in the
market. One is MRP II type of software, such as BPCS
or PeopleSoft , and the other is SPC software such
as Minitab. Unfortunately, these software
applications do not produce the same functions of as
the Quality Information System.
With a MRP II type of software, to
fulfill MRP II requirements; from quality point of
view, only the quantity information of
non-conformances will be collected. Many qualitative
aspects of the operational system and processes are
not considered. A critical drawback of this kind of
software is that it measures and reports on
performance but does not to drive improvement. It
also does not collect and store the information on
root causes and corrective actions to build up the
quality knowledge base, therefore, it is not smart
enough to learn and "suggest".
Similarly, the SPC software only
focuses on statistical calculation, it is not an
information system, and it doesn't have the quality
knowledge base function. It is also not smart enough
to learn and "suggest" to help businesses define
improvement opportunities and benefit from past
failures.
On the contrary to the above
mentioned application, a Quality Information System
is a knowledge-based smart system. It will take
advantage of the information that you have already
had, both quantitative and qualitative, and help
businesses identify improvement opportunities, find
out root causes, build effective corrective actions,
and proactively lean form the data and keep
potential problems from occurring.
